Q:

I am diabetic and for the past 2 weeks I have had trouble with my bowel movements (constipated). Is this due to being a diabetic?

A:

Constipation can be due to many things: not enough water, low fiber foods, high meat intake, lack of exercise, stress...to name a few. With long standing diabetes, we more often see the opposite: loose stools, diarrhea, or a fluctuation between diarrhea/constipation. This could be the result of autonomic neuropathy, where the diabetes over time has affected the proper functioning of the nervous system. If you are not able to correct this with dietary and activity changes, I suggest you consult your healthcare practitioner for further evaluation.
