Q:

My father had Type 2 diabetes and I have procrastinated about being checked. Recently, I have noticed a very strong sweet taste in my mouth along with decreased vision. Is this taste a symptom of any form of diabetes? I know you're going to yell at me to get checked, but wanted to know if this is something I should be concerned about. Thank you.

A:

You're right; go get checked. Elevated blood sugars will cause both those symptoms--and more. Are you noticing thirst or frequent urination? Often we don't get on top of symptoms because we want to believe we are fine and they will disappear all by themselves. It's known as "Denial". I don't think I'm telling you anything you don't know. If your lifestyle could stand improvement regarding what you eat and your activity level, all the more reason to suspect you could have high sugars. Don't procrastinate!
