Q:
Are you aware of new research specifically targeting strength training and diabetes?

A:
Strength training is important for those with diabetes, but must be monitored. As you know, this is potentially a hypertensive type of training, and diabetes is a cardiovascular disease. Any person with diabetes should first get medical clearance before embarking on a training program. This generally would involve treadmill or other test to measure cardiac response. Anyone with neuropathies, particularly retinopathy, would not be suitable for strength training. Low weights to strengthen joints are encouraged; but nothing that would involve strain.
