Q:
How do I know if my type 2 diabetes has become type 1? I fear that it has, since my thirst and hunger have gotten worse, and my blood sugars that used to run low now run in 400 and 500 range. Is it possible to become type 1 diabetic after living with type 2 for several years?

A:
It is possible to become a Type 1, but at this writing, that does not fit your description. True Type 1's require outside insulin for survival, not just for better control. It sounds as though your medication program is no longer effective for you, and/or you need a reevaluation of your lifestyle. My experience has shown me that
most people with diabetes need to reassess from time to time how they are managing things, food particularly. You can bring those blood sugars down with the right direction.
