Q:
My husband and I are contemplating the start of a new family. We were both wondering what the implications and/or complications would be for myself because I have type 2 diabetes and more importantly, for the baby. We both need a little guidance and advice.

A:
Many healthy babies are born from women with diabetes and many women develop diabetes during pregnancy, returning to normal blood sugars postpartum. There is a fasting goal of around 90 or less, and 2 hour post meal of 120 or under. Eating 6 small meals with very limited carbs in the morning and no AM fruit or juice facilitate better control. Often insulin is required the last trimester, since oral meds can cross the placenta. Start good habits now for healthy and happy pregnancy.
