Q:
What is the normal blood sugar for a six year old child? Does it differ if the child has ADHD? or is it the same for any child?

A:
At this time, the blood sugar goals are the same for children as for adults, with a fasting blood sugar of between 80-90 being the preferred range; 2 hours post meal, within a range of 120-140. ADHD will not change the criteria. Stress and chronic conditions can influence blood sugar levels. In type 2 diabetes, this is a genetic relationship; in Type 1 diabetes, there can be an autoimmune relationship. Discuss these concerns with your pediatrician.
