Q:
Is the exchange list still used in the care of diabetes? What are the current suggestions/recommendations?

A:
The Exchange List is not what is emphasized in the realistic management of diabetes. Most people with diabetes can do well by emphasizing whole foods, moderating amounts, and being physically very active. Following a rigorous exchange plan can get results. For most individuals though, it represents deprivation over time and translates into a DIET mentality. This can be a setup for bingeing. Individuals with Type 1 diabetes are generally more apt to follow an exchange approach and count carbohydrates then are Type 2's. Remember, checking your blood sugar 1-2 hours after a meal will let you know how that meal affected your glucose.
