Dear Friends and Family
On Sunday, October 13th, I am excited to say I will be taking on a new challenge by completing 26.2 miles and running the Chicago Marathon. I will be running with the Diabetes Action Team to raise money for diabetes education and research. Diabetes Action Foundation provides funding to various research programs nationwide and educational programs including sending children with diabetes to summer camp.
As many of you know finding a cure for diabetes is particularly important to me because many of my family members have been affected by this terrible disease. I am running in memory of my father, mother and my grandfather who all endured many complications from this disease. I am also running to help find a cure for my many family members who battle this disease and its crippling affects daily.
In 2010 my father, Robert Gosnell, lost a long battle to diabetes at the age of 65. My father's hardest struggle came during the last 3 years of his life, when he had both his legs amputated due to diabetes. I watched him fight each day to maintain his independence, learn to walk again, and perform the activities of daily living. The simplest tasks such as getting dressed, showering or eating breakfast were a struggle. He ultimately lost his battle in the spring of 2010 after his kidney’s failed and he could no longer tolerate dialysis. He bravely chose to leave the hospital and spend the last few days with his family at home.
For those of you who never got a chance to meet my Dad, I will tell you he was an amazing man who worked hard, stood by his beliefs and made countless sacrifices for his family. He would do anything for his family and friends. He enjoyed making others laugh and if you weren’t on your toes, you could very easily be the victim of a practical joke. Every step I run on October 13th will be for all those he was unable to complete!
The figures for diabetes are alarming, with 25.8 million diabetic and 79 million pre-diabetics living in the United States alone.
I admire my friends and family members who have fought hard to work through the struggles of diabetes. Please help me win the fight against diabetes by making a donation today. No donation is too small.
Thanks so much for your support and encouragement!
