Dear Family & Friends,
I recently accepted the challenge to run the Marine Corps Marathon this October for the Diabetes Action Team. As part of this team, I will be working towards my goal of running 26.2 miles while raising money for diabetes research through the Diabetes Action Research and Education Foundation (www.diabetesaction.org).
It started out with the bombing at the Boston Marathon. I was mad. I kept picturing Shane & the kids waiting for me at the finish line to my previous races. It made me want to run that race in defiance of those who would use terror in that or any other instance. However, I've never run 26.2, and well, I certainly wouldn't be able to run a qualifying time for Boston. Then, it dawned on me that there are other large races that I could attempt. As it turns out, the Marine Corps Marathon was a FIT in many ways.
Because all the open registration spots sold out in March (in under 2.5 hours!), my option to enter the race was by joining a fundraising team. After perusing the MANY options, I settled on the one that really speaks to something that has been a part of my life since childhood. Diabetes.
First, diabetes has taken quite a toll in my family. My paternal grandmother and my father both had type II diabetes. They worked hard with the tools they had at hand, but the disease really impacted them both. I remember my grandmother being rushed to the ER more than once. Additionally, I have a wonderful friend who is also my coworker who has dealt with type I diabetes since she was 5! She inspires me all the time by her constant challenges and determination to manage her diabetes as well as possible. There are other folks in my life that I know, but don't feel at will to share their names or stories. I know many folks with diabetes and I bet you do, too!
In addition to being able to join a fantastic fundraising team, I will run this race in honor of my oldest son, Drake who is a young Marine currently stationed in Okinawa for 2 years
See...a fit in so many ways.
I am super impressed with the types of research and pilot projects that Diabetes Action help fund. Some of the money even has come to instituions in NEO! Cleveland clinic is doing a trial study on lifestyle education for minority women and NEOMED, in Rootstown has a study regarding Chromium Piccinolate. . .i probably spelled that wrong. I looked at Diabetes Action's charity ratings and found out that $0.97 of every $1.00 go directly to research. That's pretty awesome! They are highly rated my multiple charity rating sites.
You can support my efforts by donating on my personal fundraising page - just click on the link at to the right of this message of this message (if the layout holds with your browser). Your tax-deductible contribution will fund vital research to prevent, heal, and cure type 1 and type 2 diabetes. The money you donate goes to Diabetes Action. I have already paid for my entry and will pay for my family's travel expenses and such. I am asking you to encourage my training & racing by making a donation "on my behalf."
Whatever you can give will help - it all adds up! I greatly appreciate your support and will keep you posted on my training and fundraising progress. Please forward this email to anyone you know that would be interested in supporting my effort to raise funds to fight diabetes.
